Santa’s elves busy at local medical centers

OCALA – Santa got a helping hand this year from staffers at West Marion Community Hospital and Ocala Regional Medical Center. Through the Angel Giving program, WMCH collected items to benefit 39 and ORMC collected goodies for 34 children, according to a news release.

DAR chapter reaches out to community

Student videos teach Floridians to be ‘bear smart’

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission  challenge to high school students  to produce a one-minute video encouraging people to conserve Florida black bears and take appropriate precautions when living around bears. Students submitted 17 videos they scripted, filmed and edited for the Florida Black Bear Public Service Announcement (PSA) contest sponsored by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). SummerGlen Veterans’ Club spreads holiday cheer

Ocala firefighters deliver toys to charities

Members from Ocala Fire Rescue delivered toys to local charities this week for those less fortunate in our community. Beginning in early December fire stations became collection sites and citizens were invited to drop off unwrapped presents. “Ocala Fire Rescue appreciates the generosity of all those who donated gifts for children to make this holiday season memorable” states Battalion Chief Martin Ortiz. “The charities were extremely glad to see us this year” he added.

We thought, why not use Our Tampa Bay blog to give you a little more detail? The following are all of the ways that you can recognize Breast Cancer and raise money for this worthy cause in Tampa Bay, Florida.

2010 Suzie Q Blitz Build for Breast Cancer Awareness Month
When: Saturday, October 23 at 8 am
Where: Grant Park area of Tampa Bay

The Suzie Q Blitz Build is a valiant effort organized by Habitat for Humanity Hillsborough to get a home built in just 7 days. The event is in honor of Suzanne Hastings, the wife of Habitat for Humanity crew leader, who lost her battle with breast cancer at 36. You can honor Suzie’s devotion to community and family by donating or volunteering on October 23rd. The donations to the Suzie Q build will benefit the Moffitt Cancer Center.

Beauty for the Cure

When: Saturday, October 16, 10 am - 9 pm
Where: Aveda International Plaza, Tampa, Florida
Who would have thought that a day of hair styling, mini facials, make up applications, hand massages could help contribute to a good cause? Aveda is making giving a pampering experience at the Aveda International Plaza in Tampa. FI(gh)t For the Cure at Special Fitting Event

This event goes right in line with the cause. Macy’s and Wacoal host this free bra fitting event, in which Wacoal will make a $2 donation to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Breast Cancer Foundation, for every single fitting made. Wacoal will also provide an additional $2 donation for
each bra purchased at the event.


Breast Cancer Awareness at Hard Rock Tampa
When: Entire Month of October
Where: Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Tampa, 5223 N. Orient Road, Tampa, FL 33610
Hard Rock Tampa will raise funds and public awareness by donating 25% of the proceeds from its "Pink Sheets" guest room bookings, 75% of the profits from its Pinktober Hard Rock pins, and 15% of the sales from all Pinktober items.

The goal of this event is to raise awareness and funds for both breast and prostate cancer research. Hosted by Olivia Newton-John and Moffitt Cancer Center founder, H. Lee Moffitt, the event will include a performance by Newton-John herself, along with No.1 Billboard-charting Contemporary Jazz artist and Tampa native Eric Darius.
